In spring not only do we need to spring clean our homes, but we also need to spring clean our bodies. Detoxing is a great way of cleansing our system of harmful bacteria, while supporting the body’s natural method of neutralising toxins. For those of us that lead a healthy lifestyle most of the year round, like I try to, then these detox tips can be added into our daily lives for an extra added booster, giving our skin a fresh and youthful appearance throughout the seasons.
A Probiotic a Day
I always start the day with a probiotic supplement. Take it with a large glass of water to re-hydrate the system after a good night’s sleep. Probiotics promote the natural health of the gut as they contain good bacteria. I love Best Naturals Probiotic supplements. They don’t need to be refrigerated which is great for me as I’m always on the move, and spend half of my life living out of a suitcase. The Best Naturals probiotic capsules are also suitable for vegans. For a high potency version try the Neal’s Yard pro bio boost supplement. It’s free from wheat, yeast and gluten, suitable for vegetarians, but not vegans sadly.
The Detox Fuel
Drink warm water with fresh lemon juice every morning. It’s incredibly alkalising, despite what we might think about lemons being acidic (read my blog on the alkaline diet to find out why). I also like to add in ginger root, which is good for digestion, and fresh turmeric as it has a wealth of health-benefiting properties. Wait at least 15 minutes before eating breakfast to take full advantage of the positive cleansing effects.
Before getting in the shower use a body brush. My favourite is the one from Neal’s Yard as it has natural plant fibre bristles. This means that it’s not too harsh on the skin, yet effective enough to exfoliate away dead skin particles, improving the skin’s tone and texture as well as increasing blood circulation. Use light sweeping motions, moving in the direction of the heart centre. Do be careful not to apply too much pressure though, as the lymph won’t be able to drain effectively from the lymph nodes.
Eat Your Greens
For breakfast have a green smoothie. It’s a great way of packing your veggies in before you start the day. My favourite (because it doesn’t taste completely unpalatable, like some green smoothies do) consists of 1 juiced apple (apple helps to detoxify the liver and makes the juice taste sweeter), 1 celery stalk, 1 cucumber, a handful of spinach, the juice of a lemon, a splash of aloe vera juice to aid digestion (this one is my favourite) , and a scoop of Neal’s Yard superfood organic greens blend. You can probably tell that I love Neal’s Yard products by now, but this mixture contains all the dark leafy greens needed to aid detoxification, as well as green tea, wheatgrass, chlorella and spirulina. I also like to take chlorella tablets daily, usually after exercising, as they are a detoxifying source of protein.
Throughout the day drink herbal detox teas. There are so many on the market these days. My personal favourite is Qi organic detox green tea as it combines milk thistle (known for it’s detoxifying properties) with green tea. I’m a fan of anything with green tea in it as it boosts the metabolism and contains antioxidants which have age-defying properties.
Detox Tips toTackle the Toxic Stuff
Reduce or remove inflammatory foods from your diet completely like gluten, dairy, soy, eggs, sugar, refined foods, coffee and alcohol. I try to have a dry month once a year. Taking part in ‘Dry January’ is always good, or ‘Stoptober’. Try raising a little money for charity, and then you know you’ll definitely stick to what you’ve set out to achieve. You’ll soon start to notice remarkable affects on your skin, energy levels and mood too.
Kimchi & Kombucha
Incorporate fermented foods into your diet as they contain probiotic enzymes which are good for the gut and aid digestion. Unfortunately I detest kimchi (a fermented food), and just can’t seem to acquire a taste for it. The whole process of making is also quite unpleasant, having to ‘burp’ the kimchi at various intervals during the day. No thank you! I do however like kombucha which has a similar effect on the digestive system, and is made usually out of fermented coconut water. My favourite is from ‘Love Kombucha’ as it uses very few ingredients and doesn’t contain sugar.
The Summer Body Secret
The secret to looking great in a bikini this summer is my cellulite reduction massage! Honestly, it’s amazing, even if I say so myself! It combines body brushing with a geranium & orange body scrub from Neal’s Yard, followed by a massage using the Neal’s Yard detox toning oil. What makes the massage so effective is that it combines a variety of deep friction strokes, kneading and lymphatic drainage techniques that redistributes and assists in the breaking down of fat cells, detoxifying the skin, and creating a visibly smoother appearance. Of all detox tips this is the most popular. For the best results book onto this treatment once a week for 6 weeks. It’s the perfect pre-holiday pick me up.
Shed with an Infra Red
If you can somehow hunt down an infrared sauna then you’re laughing. Lucky for me there’s one at at the Royal Retreat spa in Tunbridge Wells, just a few minutes away from my home. However, I’m sure there are many other spas and gyms that are also equipped with one. The infrared sauna eliminates around 7 times more toxins than a normal sauna, is fantastic for improving circulation, purifying the skin, and even aiding in weight-loss.
